The mountain rescuers

Spectacular rescue missions & great emotions

Heroic deeds, dramas, action, heartache and plenty of emotion: the ZDF series "Die Bergretter" has been thrilling audiences since 2009 - with stories full of suspense, humanity and breathtaking landscape shots between Dachstein and Grimming.

What once began under the name "Die Bergwacht" is now a permanent fixture on television. In the meantime, 16 seasons have been broadcast - and the popularity of the series is unbroken.

The focus is on Markus Kofler and his mountain rescue team, who go to their limits in spectacular missions to save lives. In addition to dramatic rescue missions, the episodes also tell of the highs and lows in the private lives of the main characters - with plenty of emotion, suspense and a touch of romance.

The cinematic home of the series is Ramsau am Dachstein, where most of the scenes have been filmed since the beginning. However, numerous other locations in the Schladming-Dachstein region also serve as the backdrop for the gripping scenes - and show the beauty of the Styrian mountains from their most impressive side.

Season 1 (2009)

Extreme climber Andreas Marthaler is planning a climbing school in the Grand Canyon with his girlfriend Sarah. After the tragic death of his best friend Stefan, Andreas takes his place in the Ramsau mountain rescue team and looks after Stefan's family. Between responsibility, grief and burgeoning love for Emilie, Stefan's widow, Andreas begins a new life in the mountains.

Season 2 (2010):

Andreas is worried about his girlfriend Sarah, who is in a coma after a car accident. At the same time, he has to save Stefan's family farm, which is under threat of foreclosure. The mountain rescue team is involved in various dramatic rescue missions, including the rescue of a diabetic from a rock face and the search for a missing boy. The season brings personal and professional challenges for Andreas.

Season 3 (2011):

The series is renamed "The Mountain Rescuers". Andreas and his team rescue an unconscious diver and search for a missing man who was looking for a gold treasure. The mountain rescuers are confronted with various challenges, including rescuing a blind girl, rescuing an extreme sportsman and helping a bear expert. The season shows the versatility of rescue missions.

Season 4 (2012):

The first episode begins dramatically with the rescue of a heavily pregnant woman in the Dachstein massif. The mountain rescuers are faced with complex challenges, including the rescue of a hiker and her daughter on a bridge in danger of collapsing. The season also deals with the mountain rescuers' private affairs, including Bea's pregnancy and Emilie's continuing dreams of a future with Andreas.

Season 5 (2013):

The team fights for the lives of casualties in various rescue missions. The season evolves from routine actions to catastrophes and emotional dramas. The mountain rescuers are confronted with a woman's unusual behavior during a rescue and encounter deadly conflicts in a start-up company. The dangers of the forces of nature are emphasized.

Season 6 (2014):

Luise Bähr joins the team as Katharina Strasser, while Bea opts for her family life. New challenges and rescue missions lie ahead.

Season 7 (2015):

After the death of Andreas Marthaler, Markus Kofler takes over the leadership. The mountain rescuers are confronted with various dramatic events, including the supposed disappearance of an archaeologist and the double life of a man who puts his two families in mortal danger in the mountains. In their private lives, the team experiences weddings, affairs and tensions between Markus and Katharina, who accuses him of not having done enough to save Andreas.

Season 8 (2016):

The mountain rescuers face new challenges in the mountains. On six missions, Markus Kofler and his team are pushed to their limits, searching for an avalanche victim and having to venture through dense fog. In their private lives, the mountain rescuers are confronted with relationship problems and emotional turmoil while at the same time managing their rescue missions.

Season 9 (2017):

Markus Kofler and his team continue their exciting rescue missions in the breathtaking mountain world around the Dachstein. The mountain rescuers have to clear up the collapse of a biathlete, intervene in a family tragedy and also face challenges in their private lives, including looking after an eight-year-old daughter of a friend who has had an accident.

Season 10 (2018):

The mountain rescuers are once again faced with life-threatening rescue missions. Markus Kofler struggles not only in the mountains, but also with personal turmoil. The season also sheds light on the return of mountain rescuer Katharina to Ramsau and Ben, who receives a tempting job offer.

11th season (2019):

Emilie finds out about Tobias Herbrechter's affair and leaves Ramsau and with it the mountain rescue team. This leaves a vacancy in the mountain rescue team. Since season 11, the experienced climber Simon takes over.

Season 12 (2020):

Lorenz König, Mia's biological father, turns up. Markus has to come to terms with the fact that Mia wants to spend a lot of time with her biological father. First he shows her her deceased mother Carola's favorite places. Then Mia decides to transfer to a private school in Zurich.

13th season (2021):

For mountain rescuer Markus Kofler and Katharina Strasser, the question of having a child of their own becomes a test of endurance that their relationship cannot withstand at the end of the season. Markus also has to come to terms with the tragic accidental death of his mother. But the other team members are also in turmoil. Policewoman Jessie is struggling with shadows from the past. Despite all the personal ups and downs, the mountain rescuers are always ready to work together to find missing people and rescue people who have had accidents.

14th season (2022):

In addition to risky rescue operations, the emotional turmoil of main character Markus Kofler takes center stage. After the separation of Katharina and Markus at the end of the previous season and the surprising death of Jessika Pollath in the following episode, Markus was faced with the decision to leave Ramsau and escape the tragic events. At first it seemed as if he would go on a Himalayan expedition with his new flame Nina, but in the end he decided against it.

15th season (2023)

In the fall of 2023, the 15th season of "Die Bergretter" started on the ZDF media library. The first episode, entitled "Under Suspicion", promises exciting new episodes and hints at a lot of turmoil in the lives of Markus Kofler (Sebastian Ströbel) and his colleagues.

16th season (2024)

You will also see plenty of drama, action-packed missions and heartache in the 16th season. The death of Peter Herbrechter and Nina's serious accident cause the team a lot of trouble outside of the rescue operations.

The series are available free of charge in the ZDF media library.
