The perfect ski touring equipment
The right ski touring equipment is crucial for a safe and successful tour. It not only ensures optimal performance during the ascent and descent but also provides protection against the challenges of alpine terrain, such as sudden weather changes or avalanche risks. Well-matched equipment minimizes the risk of injury and helps use energy efficiently. Anyone going on a ski tour should therefore choose their gear carefully to be fully prepared.
The ideal touring ski:
- Should be light enough to make the ascent easier, yet sturdy enough to provide safety and control during the descent.
- Should reach up to the nose, although depending on skiing style and snow conditions, a shorter or longer version may be more suitable.
- Affects the contact area and thus stability in the snow. Wider skis are particularly advantageous in deep snow, while narrower models are better for fast ascents.
- Must be paired with a suitable, lightweight, and robust touring binding that is optimized for both ascent and descent.
- Also requires the right choice of climbing skins to ensure a safe ascent. Pay attention to good grip and ease of use.
The perfect clothing:
- Base layer (underwear)
Merino wool or synthetic fibers such as polyester. Both materials effectively wick moisture away from the body and keep you dry.
- Intermediate layer (insulation)
Fleece or light down (depending on temperature and activity level). A fleece-based top or a down jacket are good options that provide additional warmth.
- Outer layer (wind and weather protection)
A breathable and water-repellent or waterproof jacket and pants made of Gore-Tex or similar material. This layer protects against wind, snow and rain while allowing breathability.
- Ski or touring pants
Robust, lightweight, water-repellent material. Some touring pants have ventilation zippers that help regulate body temperature during the ascent.
- Gloves
A set of lightweight, breathable gloves for the ascent and thicker, water-repellent gloves for the descent.
- Hat or headband
Merino wool or synthetic fibers. A headband or lightweight hat protects your head from the cold without encouraging sweating.
I pack my (ski touring) backpack and take with me:
- Backpack: A backpack with sufficient volume (approx. 20–30 L) that provides enough space for emergency equipment and provisions.
- Avalanche transceiver (LVS): A device used to locate people buried in an avalanche.
- Avalanche probe: A long, sturdy pole used for locating and searching for buried individuals.
- Shovel: A stable, lightweight shovel essential for clearing snow in the event of an avalanche.
- Helmet: A lightweight helmet that protects against injuries from falls or hazards in alpine terrain.
- First aid kit: A small kit with bandages, plasters, painkillers, and specialized tools for emergencies.
