15.04.2024

Running over hill and dale. From gentle trails across lush alpine meadows to challenging summit routes. Our region is not only known as a winter sports resort and hiking area, passionate runners are also offered a wide selection of trail running routes.

Trail running is more than just a trend sport. It is a full-body workout and an experience for all the senses. It requires not only fitness, but also coordination and concentration when running off-road. In the Schladming-Dachstein region, you can choose from over 40 trails in all 4 levels of difficulty. You can find out more about them in this blog. Have you ever been out and about on the region's trails?

The first steps into the trail running adventure

Running & Easy Trails

These routes are ideal for getting started. Simple and short running routes on asphalt, forest and gravel roads await you on running routes. Like here, for example, on the large panoramic running circuit, which takes you 14 km right across Schladming. The Rohrmoos running circuit, for example, offers a combination of running and trail running routes, leading through meadows and forests and offering wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. It is one of the easy trails that lead you slightly uphill and downhill over various surfaces.

Medium trails

Those who prefer something a little more challenging will find what they are looking for on routes such as the Freienstein Sprintrail, the Klamm Trail or the Hochwurzen Trail. On these tours, you are partly in alpine terrain and have to cover a few meters in altitude. You can find more information on the length and intensity of the trail running routes here.

X-treme Trails

Are you looking for the ultimate kick? Then x-treme trail routes such as the Schladminger Tauern Trail, the Stoderzinken Speedtrail or the Königsetappe in high alpine terrain are just the thing for you.

The Torlauf Dachstein is also a spectacular challenge for all racing enthusiasts. The marathon distance (42 km) will really get your pulse racing. In addition to trails along a breathtaking landscape at the foot of the Dachstein, a via ferrata passage awaits you on this route.

If that's a step too steep for you, you can also take part in the half marathon, the 10 km lap or the relay race at this legendary running event. This year, the starting shot will be fired on 07.09. You can find more information here.

Two local top athletes, Carina Schrempf and Tamara Steiner, were also out and about along the Schladminger-Tauern Trail for the filming of the program "Bergwelten". This can be seen on ServusTV on April 22nd. In addition to impressive nature shots from the region, you will also get an insight into how the athletes use their home for training purposes and recharge their batteries at the same time.

Endurance paired with precision - that's what biathlon is all about. Ramsau am Dachstein has made a name for itself as the Austrian Mecca for Nordic disciplines in recent years and is a popular training venue for amateur athletes and professionals alike. Tamara Steiner from Ramsau was practically born with a passion for the sport of biathlon. She won the European Junior Champion title in 2018. She has been competing in the Biathlon World Cup since 2020 and has already established herself in the top 50 of the world rankings. Together with Ramsauer Verkehrsbetriebe, she is also supported by the Schladming-Dachstein Tourist Board as a head sponsor.

Carina Schrempf is also passionate about endurance sports. She began her career on the running track and then continued in cycling. She was one of the top national track and field athletes in middle-distance running. She won a total of ten state championship titles in the elite class over 400m, 800m and 1500m. Due to injury, the Ennstal native literally switched gears in 2021 and swapped her running shoes for a bike. And with success! Last year, for example, she won the national championships in the road race and is also one of three Austrians in the Women's WorldTour.
