Hiking at dusk When our mountains go to sleep

It’s that special moment when the last light of the day bathes the mountains in a warm golden glow, the birds quiet down, and nature almost seems to hold its breath. Right at this time, many of us are still out and about—at the hut, descending the trails, or deliberately on a sunset hike. But twilight brings not only magic, it also brings challenges. While we enjoy the silence, nature is truly coming alive: for wildlife, this is rush hour. We’ll show you how to experience these magical hours without disturbing the rhythm of nature.

Did you know that ...

... many wild animals have adapted their rhythm of life precisely to these quiet hours?

... even a headlamp or loud talking is pure stress for them?

... headlamps with red light mode are more pleasant for you and the animals?

... in some protected areas there are bans on entering at night to protect the wildlife?

1. Inform yourself in advance: Some protected areas have night-time access bans. Check the rules of your tour in advance. (Which areas?)

2. Wrap up warm & check the weather: It can quickly get chilly in the evening - even in summer. Essential: headlamp, warm (and preferably rainproof) clothing, provisions, water and a small first aid kit.

3. Plan a time buffer: As beautiful as the sunset is, the way back in the dark can be challenging. Plan enough time or choose a route you know well.

4. Stay on marked trails: Cross-country may be tempting, but it disturbs the wildlife and can quickly become dangerous in the dark.

5. Keep your distance: If you encounter a wild animal, stay calm and keep a respectful distance. Avoid taking photos with a flash - rather capture the moment with your eyes and heart.

6. Light with moderation: Use your headlamp sparingly and, if possible, switch to red light mode. This is easier on your eyes and also disturbs the animals less.

7. Enjoy quietly: Nature soundtrack instead of party playlist. Keep your voice down and enjoy the unique "quiet" sounds around you.

8. Know your limits: Night hikes are fantastic, but also challenging. Start small - for example with one of our starry places as your destination.

Starry sky instead of a screen

Being out and about in the evening is an experience for all the senses - the clear air, the starry sky, the silence. Remember: you are only a guest in this nocturnal realm. Respect its inhabitants and make your adventure as quiet and gentle as possible.

Our starry places are made for such time-outs. Away from the hustle and bustle, with an unobstructed view of space - perfect for letting go of everyday life. Pack a blanket and a warm cup of tea and let yourself be enchanted by the Milky Way.

🌌 For stargazers: In the Schladming-Dachstein region, the night becomes an experience: at six unique stargazing spots, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world above our heads - from the shining planets of our solar system to distant galaxies millions of light years away.
