Want to enjoy the mountains without a car? You can easily reach these 7 mountain destinations in the Schladming-Dachstein region by public transport. 1) From the Ursprungalm to the Duisitzkarsee lake

Duration: 5:00 h | Elevation gain: 574 m ascent / 983 m descent | Starting point: Planet Planai or Schladming train station

Public transportation: Hiking bus Ursprungsalm / Hiking bus Eschachalm

Hike from hut to hut, from lake to lake and valley to valley... On the Bergseeweg, the start and finish points are not in the same place, but the hiking buses will take you back to your starting point in comfort. That's what makes starting your mountain adventure with public transport so appealing, isn't it? You can board directly at the train station in Schladming. The hiking bus 972 takes you to the Ursprungalm. From here, you follow the historic mule track via the Giglachseen lakes to the picturesque Duisitzkarsee lake in Obertal, where the 973 bus takes you back to the station. In my opinion, this hike is one of the most beautiful and diverse tours in the region and you should definitely experience it for yourself.

There are several places to stop for refreshments along the tour, such as the Giglachseehütte or the Eschachalm. Incidentally, the mountain huts we present to you in this blog are all partners of Almkulinarik by Richard Rauch or the Schladming-Dachstein Genusspartner this summer. Quality and regionality are very important here.

2) With the panorama gondola up the Dachstein

Starting point: Schladming train station

Public transportation: Line 960 / Dachstein gondola lift

Taking the gondola up the Dachstein and enjoying the impressive view from the suspension bridge or the new sky ladder is probably at the top of many people's Schladming-Dachstein bucket list. Is it on yours too? Arriving by train, you can change directly at Schladming station to the 960 bus to Ramsau am Dachstein, which will take you to the valley station. The Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard not only includes travel on the hiking buses and tolls, you can also use the Dachstein gondola lift once a week free of charge.

3) Hike to the Friedenskircherl and up the Stoderzinken

Duration: 2:30 h | elevation gain: 350 m | starting point: Gröbming bus station

Public transportation: Summer bus line from Schladming or St. Martin & Stoderzinken bus shuttle

The journey along the Alpine road alone is winding, but spectacular and full of views. From July to September, the summer bus route takes you from Schladming or St. Martin to Gröbming, where you can take the shuttle bus to the Stoderzinken.

Gröbming's local mountain is a perfect excursion destination for hikers who appreciate great views and little elevation gain. The Friedenskircherl can be reached in around 40 minutes on foot. The route to the summit and back takes around 2 h 30 min and is therefore ideal for a half-day hike with the whole family. If you're still not exhausted enough, you can make a detour to the Gröbming Adventure Park on the way back. Right next door is the Gröbminger Alm, where you can round off your mountain experience in comfort.

4) From the Riesach Falls to the Sonntagskarseen lakes

Duration: 6:00 h | elevation gain: 1067 m | starting point: Planet Planai or Schladming train station

Public transportation: Hiking bus Riesachfall

A thundering waterfall, rustic alpine huts and 3 impressive mountain lakes - all this awaits you on the hike to the Sonntagskarseen lakes. However, fitness is required here, as you have to cover over 1000 m in altitude. Line 947 takes you from Schladming to the starting point of the hike in 45 minutes and then back again in comfort. The Preintalerhütte is one of the stops along the way to these natural gems. Fancy a short break and a cranberry tart? On the bus ride, you will also pass the Waldhäuslalm. Here, too, the Alpine culinary dish this summer is a dessert. After all that effort, you've definitely earned a little sweet refreshment!

5) Hike to the Hornfeldspitze in the Sölktal valley

Duration: 3:00 h | elevation gain: 490 m | starting point: Sölkpass chapel

Public transportation: Valley bus

The valley bus takes you through the Großssölktal valley up to the highest pass in Styria, the Sölkpass, where many different hiking options await you. You have probably already heard of the tour to the Deneck, which leads past the Kaltenbach lakes. The hike to the Hornfeldspitze is a little less well-known, but no less impressive.

From the Sölkpass chapel, the path leads steadily uphill in serpentines and finally over a ridge to the summit, where a tremendous panoramic view awaits you and compensates you for all your efforts.

6) Tour to the Krahbergzinken

Duration: 2:30 h | elevation gain: 380 m | starting point: Planet Planai

Public transportation: Planai gondola lift

Take the cable car for the first few meters of altitude and then start your hiking adventure - this is another way to start your mountain adventure using public transport. With the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard, you can use one cable car on our excursion mountains free of charge every day.

The Planai is not only a paradise for all mountain sports enthusiasts on two wheels in summer, there is also plenty of adventure for families and hiking fans. From the valley station, you can reach the Krahbergzinken in around 1.5 hours. The last inclined section to the summit requires a head for heights and surefootedness, but it is secured with a rope.

If you long for a culinary treat after the hike, you can fortify yourself at one of the many mountain huts on the Planai, such as the Wieslechalm, Onkel Willy's Hütte or Da Sepp.

7) Three-lake hike in the Seewigtal valley

Duration: 4:30 h | elevation gain: 538 m | starting point: Bodensee/Seewigtal

Public transportation: Hiking bus to the Styrian Bodensee

Three lakes on one mountain tour, that's what you can experience in the Seewigtal. From Styrian Lake Constance, you can hike up to the Hans-Wödl-Hütte at Hüttensee and then on to Obersee. Which lake do you find the most beautiful? You can get to this water-rich hike in the Schladming-Dachstein region with the hiking bus 976. With the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard, use of the hiking buses is free and there are also discounts for climate ticket holders!
