Antlass eggs

Not all eggs are the same - especially not at Easter.

Have you heard of the Antlass eggs? Not many people know about this special custom. Find out more in our blog:

Antler eggs are the eggs laid by hens on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. An antler egg is considered to bring protection and blessings to the home and family. Even today, an antler egg is often walled into the wall of a new house or stable.

According to old traditions, an antique egg had very special powers:

  • When stored in the attic, it was supposed to protect against lightning strikes.
  • Burying it in the field was supposed to ensure a good harvest.
  • Hanging it in the stable was supposed to protect against evil witches.
  • Eating an antlass egg was supposed to protect you from illness.

The word "Antlass" means release, indulgence or absolution. Until the late Middle Ages, public church penitents were released from penance on Maundy Thursday after a 40-day fast and were allowed to attend church services again.
