Advent = the time of silence
1) Experience the Krampus hustle and bustle up close
But not on the days around December 5. The shrill bells announce it from afar: This is the time when mystical figures with spooky larvae cause palpitations.
Traditionally, impressive Krampus runs take place in many places at the beginning of Advent, such as the one in Schladming. With around 800 Krampuses and other traditional figures, the event is one of the largest parades in the Alpine region. A true spectacle. Have you ever experienced the Schladming Krampus Run in person?
The famous Öblarn Krampus play is also a piece of home and a top event at Christmas time. It is one of the last Styrian folk plays and was awarded UNESCO cultural heritage status in 2014.
Its origins go back to the year 1816. In order to get closer to the original play step by step, a start was made in the 1980s with the recording of all existing text excerpts and the roles were documented in conversations with long-standing players.
At the beginning of December, the church square in Öblarn once again becomes an impressive backdrop for the traditional play.
2) Enjoy regional delicacies at the Advent markets
If you are longing for some peace and quiet, you will get your money's worth strolling through the various Christmas markets.
In the picturesque village of Pürgg, you won't experience Advent stalls in the traditional sense, but Advent literally moves into the houses here. Culinary delicacies and traditional handicrafts can be admired and enjoyed in stables, apartments or garages. A different kind of Advent market that you should definitely visit if you are spending the pre-Christmas period in the Schladming-Dachstein region!
With performances on the Advent stage, a children's program and culinary offerings, events around the "Advent am Talbach" in Schladming ensure an atmospheric pre-Christmas season.
In addition to homemade delicacies such as hot chestnuts, Kletzenbrot or Christmas cookies, you will also find handmade treasures at the Advent markets. Perhaps you are still looking for a Christmas present or a vacation souvenir?
3) Take a walk in Winter Wonderland
Everyone probably has certain images in their head when they think of Advent: images of Christmas trees, candles and Christmas lights - but above all images of snow-covered mountains, meadows and forests. Do you think an evening Advent walk in the snow is just as much a part of the Christmas season as mulled wine, cookies and Christmas carols? Then you should definitely visit the trail of lights in Haus im Ennstal, the old mill in Ramsau am Dachstein and the Talbachklamm gorge in Schladming. What could be nicer than wrapped up warm and wading through the snow alongside flickering lights?
4) Cheer on the athletes at the FIS World Cup in Ramsau am Dachstein
In mid-December, the elite of the Nordic Combined will be back in Ramsau am Dachstein. The competitions have been a regular fixture on the FIS World Cup calendar since 1995/96.
