Große Mitterstein-Tour

Tour description

From the mountain station, the descent leads along the groomed slope to the old valley station of the Mitterstein chairlift (out of service). From here, endurance athletes can follow the signposted route up to the Seethalerhütte at 2.741 meters.

The tour is only possible during the operating hours of the Dachstein Gletscherbahn.

Conditions on the glacier
The "Große Mitterstein tour" is located above the tree line. Most of the Dachstein glacier faces north-east or north and is susceptible to rapid weather changes. Another major issue is rapidly falling or long-lasting fog, which can cause temperatures to plummet. Please inform yourself well before the tour about the weather development and snow conditions and carry sufficient protective equipment.

Map, elevation profile & further information

The "Große Mitterstein tour" starts at the Dachstein mountain station. As the first section of the tour is downhill, please do not put on your touring skis yet. The route leads down a secured and groomed descent (along the former ski slope) to the old valley station of the Mitterstein chairlift (out of service). Once there, the touring skis are skinned up and from now on the route leads uphill on a marked ascent track next to the prepared descent. If you have already crossed the Ramsau glacier, you can decide at the crossroads whether you want to turn left back to the Dachstein mountain station or turn right and take the Dirndl tour to the Seethalerhütte.

From the west: Tauern Autobahn (A10) to Knoten Ennstal - turnoff direction Graz/Schladming - stay on the Ennstal-Bundesstraße (B320) for approx. 20 km until Schladming - take the turnoff for Ramsau - via the Dachsteinstraße to the Dachstein Gondola Bottom Station

From the north: Pyhrn Autobahn (A9)  direction Liezen - take the Ennstal-Bundesstraße (B320)  to Schladming - turnoff Ramsau - via the Dachsteinstraße to the Dachstein Gondola Bottom Station

Link Google MapsEven though there are parking spaces at the Dachstein Cable Car Station, it is recommended that you take the public bus from Schladming or Ramsau to use the gondola.

Take the 960 bus to the Dachstein Türlwandhütte stop.

Clothing and protective equipment
Make sure you are prepared for rapid changes in the weather and increased UV exposure in high alpine terrain. A wind and water-repellent jacket, hood and moisture-resistant gloves are essential. Sun protection (eyes, skin and lips) is also very important.

Safety equipment
A modern avalanche transceiver, a metal avalanche shovel and a probe are part of the basic equipment for every ski tour and freeride descent that takes you off the secured slopes and into the open ski area. This triumvirate of avalanche transceiver/shovel/probe not only helps you to be found quickly in the event of an avalanche burial, but above all to be able to help any companions or other buried victims quickly.

The smartphone is with you anyway. We generally recommend installing a GPS app and familiarizing yourself with how to use it. Network coverage is generally good on the Dachstein. A small first aid kit with a multitool should also always be carried.

On many tours, it is advisable to carry a glacier harness and via ferrata set, crampons, ice axe and a short rope so that you can react quickly to snow conditions. The exact equipment for each tour can be found in the individual route descriptions.

The alpine emergency number in Austria is 140 (Europe 112).

If you have no network reception, please restart your phone. However, before you enter your PIN code for the SIM card, dial the emergency number. You can also make the emergency call in other networks.

In Schladming and in Ramsau/Dachstein you will of course find many providers who will support you at the start of your ski touring career and teach you the right ascent and descent technique, or who will take over your tour planning for more demanding companies and guide you safely through the high alpine terrain.
